Project monster does not sleep!

I finally finished getting the walls and ceiling scrapped of 100 years of nasty colors of paint and old wallpaper.  Once I hit the actual lathe and plaster walls, I was pleasantly surprised at how good a shape they were actually in.  Sure the corners have cracks and under the windows has some age showing.  The ceiling had more cracks than a frozen lake in February.  I got them patched pretty well, and no chunks of plaster rained on my head.  I have to admit, I was pretty worried that the whole thing was going to come crashing down and my living room project would become the remodel project from hell.

I find that my remodeling projects become more "my project" than a 'home project'.  It amazes me how quickly family disappears when you need to get something done. I still have much more to do, but I'm starting to like the way it is is turning out.  We still need to do the flooring and put the wood trim around the windows, but unfortunately, that will take woodworking tools which are buried somewhere out the garage.   A garage that got buried with "stuff" over the course of the winter.  How do we manage to accumulate so much "stuff".  I think some days the solution is to open the doors and just put a sign up that says "Make Offer".  So, we need to reorganize the garage so that we can get at the table saws and other necessary tools or as my husband would offer "build another garage".  While that sometimes sounds like a great idea, I'm afraid we would just end up with another building in which to accumulate more "Stuff".

So, once again, we do projects in stages.  Now that the walls are done and finally looking pretty decent, I'm afraid the floors will have to wait.  The plan is to get rid of the carpeting and put down new wood floors.  I'm pretty sure that the floors under the carpeting are not going to be salvageable.
I suppose you want to see it?  OK, here's a picture of the corner to give you a taste!

We usually run out of time or money.  It seems that you can never have both at the same time.  With the arrival of spring, my outdoor projects are going to have to take priority.  Time has a way of accelerating during the summer.  The outside project is to re-side the house.  I have figured out what I want, but if I get what I want, I'll have to install it myself, because it would get too expensive to hire someone to do it.  If you know my husband and I, then you know that there probably isn't anyone that you could hire to do it up to our standards, so it's best if we do it ourselves. Did I forget to mention, I've got to go back to work, so I can afford to do the job.  I hope I can save enough money before summer runs out.  So, it seems I'm out of time and out of money!   So, why is it you can have one or the other or neither, but you can't have both?

  1. I can soooo relate! Mu husband and I have on old house that needs everything re-done. Some projects have taken years, others months, others we get smart and hire out. Oh the joys. We call it a bonding experience..whatever doesn't kill you, etc.

    Thanks for sharing.
